Engineering and construction company URS Corp. on July 11 said a team it is leading was picked as preferred bidder for a contract to decommission a British nuclear power plant. The five-year contract to decommission the Sellafield nuclear complex in West Cumbria carries a maximum annual value of $2.5 billion and may be extended for a total of 17 years, bringing the total value as high as $42.5 billion.
The URS consortium, known as Nuclear Management Partners Ltd., is led by URS's Washington Division, based in Boise, and includes Areva and AMEC PLC. Nuclear Management Partners was picked to begin contract finalization with the U.K. Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
The preferred bidder organization will own the shares in the Sellafield Site License Co., Sellafield Ltd., for the duration of the contract.
The work covers the Sellafield, Calder Hall, Windscale and Capenhurst sites, which all form part of the Sellafield Site License Co.
The contract is expected to be awarded in October.
